Population Growth and Water Systems

  • Global water facts. According to the United Nations (UN), around 828 million people who live in slum areas do not have access to potable water and sanitation facilities. These people are at risk of diseases like cholera, malaria and diarrhea.
  • Impact of the booming population to water systems. It is estimated that 3.3 billion people around the world live in urban areas. The urban population grows even further as around five million people transfer to urban areas every month especially in developing countries. With the booming population, basic services and resources are becoming insufficient to meet even the most basic needs of the growing population.
  • Aggravating factors. The water problem is further aggravated by conflicts, natural disasters, climate change and industrialization.
  • The Philippine water situation. In Metro Manila and other urban areas in the Philippines, people drink water straight from the tap. Many households also use waterways as septic tanks. And for communities not yet served by the two major concessionaires, water that is not even potable may cost several thousand pesos a month.
