Philippine Agriculture and Fishery Statistics (2009 data)

  • Crop production. The production of agricultural crops used 12.8 million hectares of land, 7.2 million hectares (56%) of which was utilized for palay and corn production. Of the 79.5 million metric tons of crops that were produced, 54.6 million metric tons (69%) belong to major crops like coconut, sugarcane, and banana, while 23.3 million metric tons (29%) belong to cereals like palay and corn. Half of the total production value was derived from palay and corn (315.3 billion out of 632.0 billion pesos).
  • Rice and corn stocks. As of July 2009, 2.7 million metric tons of rice and 218 thousand metric tons of corn were on stock. Meanwhile, as of January 2009, there has been a total supply of 15.0 million metric tons of rice and 7.3 million metric tons of corn.
  • Rice imports. Vietnam, the biggest rice importer, has brought in 1.5 million metric tons of rice. Thailand and Pakistan, on the other hand, have imported 65,000 and 10,000 metric tons of rice respectively.
  • Farm area. As of 2002, the Philippines holds 9.6 million hectares of farmland. The Bicol region has the largest farm area with 891.9 thousand hectares, followed by the Zamboanga Peninsula with 758.3 thousand hectares, and Soccsksargen with 775.3 thousand hectares.
  • Fish production. For 2009, 5.1 million metric tons of fish worth 215.6 billion pesos were caught. Aquaculture operations yielded the largest quantity with 2.4 million metric tons (49%), and the highest value with 81.5 billion pesos (38%). Municipal fishing yielded 1.3 million metric tons of fish (27%) worth 75.3 billion pesos (35%) while commercial fishing produced 1.2 million metric tons (25%) worth 58.8 billion pesos (27%).
  • Livestock and poultry production. Out of the 2.3 million metric tons of livestock produced, 1.9 million metric tons (83%) was from hog production. This amounted to 161.1 billion pesos, 82.1% of the total livestock value. Out of the 1.3 million metric tons of poultry, chicken composed 96% of the total production. This amounted to 107.7 billion pesos, 97% of the 110.1 million peso total value. Chicken eggs also dominated the egg production with 368.5 thousand metric tons and 31.2 billion pesos. Hog and chicken products also dominated inventory.
