Global Rice Output May Be Insufficient

  • Projected rice production “just enough”. According to the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), rice output is projected to reach 450 to 460 million tons for the 2011 to 2012 season. This may be just enough to meet the 450 million ton demand.
  • Drought in China. Areas of central China are experiencing the worst drought in 50 years. In fact, rainfall in Wuhan city was 70% lower this year, compared with a year earlier. This is affecting half of all crops and causing estimated economic losses of more than 300 million yuan ($46 million). As China is the world’s largest grower and consumer, this drought may have a significant impact to the current season’s projected global rice output.
  • Abnormal monsoon rains in India. Abnormal monsoon rains in India, the second largest grower and producer, may also significantly influence the projected rice output.
  • No surplus. The current rice output projection does not yet take into account the impact of weather abnormalities in China and India. There is no projected surplus, leaving little cushion for any losses from the drought in China or potential monsoon problems in India.
